1. Keep inventory. Be sure to keep photographs along with the receipts for all items of value that could potentially be destroyed so that you are appropriately compensated (if you have insurance) instead of being out of luck.

2. Keep copies of vital data. Whether your data is co-located or simply stored on hard drives, be sure to have backup copies of data that is essential to continue your business. Be sure to keep this stored at an offsite location as some events such as natural disasters may wipe out everything in the general area.
3. Go paperless. If you have loads of folders containing client files or critical company information, storing these away in seemingly safe file cabinets is extremely risky. The files could be ruined by any number of natural disasters as well as by human error. When a file is on paper it is time consuming to make physical copies and costly to find additional protected space to store the copies so it is safest to store these electronically.
4. Redundancy. Duplicate all important components of your system to make it fail-safe. If done correctly this forces the component as well as its duplicate to fail simultaneously in order to cause a system failure. This may be difficult to perform with little electrical experience but a professional can be hired for a very reasonable price.
5. Store expensive equipment or documents on the top floor. Unless tornadoes are your only fear, keeping things out of the basement and higher up will save you the outrageous expenses associated with flooding.
